Fresh dog food is revolutionizing pet nutrition, providing a healthier, less processed diet for dogs. A recent Forbes article explores the top fresh dog food brands, highlighting their benefits for digestion, energy levels, and overall well-being.
Dr. Brett Shorenstein, co-founder of VIP, participated in the Forbes article by offering his expert opinion on the impact of fresh food on pet health. He explains, “Feeding your dog fresh, whole foods can lead to improved digestion, increased energy levels, and a shinier coat.” His insights reinforce the importance of choosing high-quality, natural ingredients for your pet.
When transitioning your dog to a fresh diet, Dr. Shorenstein advises a gradual approach: “Before fully switching over onto new food, you’ll want to start with 25% new food, 75% old food for two days, then half and half for two days, followed by 75% new food and 25% old food for two days.” He emphasizes that not every diet is right for every pet: “We can see people transition, where their pet’s stool was perfect, and everything was perfect. And once they transition, they’re going more frequently or their stool is more soft, and so that might be a fiber-related concern.” In some cases, an over-the-counter fiber supplement can help, but if stool issues persist for more than a month, he recommends returning to the original diet and exploring a better-suited fresh food option.
Dr. Shorenstein also stresses the importance of considering your pet’s life stage when selecting a diet. “I recommend fresh food diets only for dogs over a year old to ensure they’re getting the calories and nutrients necessary for optimal growth and development, which is easier to measure using traditional commercial food.” This ensures that younger dogs receive the balanced nutrition they need for healthy development.
